Vastu Shastra transcends spirituality and religious beliefs, and incorporates many scientific truths with logical reasoning. It is the science of architecture that guides us to live a prosperous and healthy life by harnessing the power of nature to its fullest potential in the spaces we inhabit.

We know that the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun, tilted at 23.4°. This brings us to an angle where, the north-east is slightly lower compared to south-west. When the buildings and houses we construct are aligned with the Earth’s rotation, the cosmic energies that flow throughout the universe help promote our health, inner well-being and a life filled with happiness for the occupants.

It is a well-established fact that we can reap many benefits when we build our homes in harmony with nature and in accordance with its principles. Based on the Earth’s rotation, when the northeast side of a house is open and free, and the southwest side is elevated and enclosed, the structure is more likely to absorb fresh and healthy air. This is why an open or void space in the north or east of a building is considered a sign of good health and wealth.

According to Vastu Shastra, the eight directional guardians, known as the Ashtadhikpalakas, preside over the eight directions—the four main directions and the four corners of buildings and plots. Among them, the southwest direction is ruled by Nairuti, associated with negative forces. To protect ourselves from any adverse effects, this area should be kept heavy, stable, and completely closed.

The southeast direction is governed by Agni, the element of fire. Therefore, it is beneficial to locate kitchens in homes and electrical or machinery rooms in factories in this direction. When a kitchen is placed in the southeast, the stove should ideally be positioned so that the person cooking faces east.

In homes where it is not possible to locate the kitchen in the southeast, the stove may be placed in the northwest part of the house, which is considered acceptable. Additionally, it is beneficial to keep heavier structures and loads in the south and west portions of homes and apartments, while avoiding excessive empty space in these areas.

In many places, water bodies are commonly constructed in the northwest. However, it is advisable to avoid creating wells, boreholes, or underground water tanks in this corner, as it may lead to imbalances.

Thus, our ancestors carefully studied the laws of nature and passed down their understanding through Vastu Shastra, guiding us on how to derive maximum benefit from our surroundings. Even today, it can be observed that homes, businesses, and temples built in accordance with Vastu Shastra continue to remain centers of prosperity and well-being.
